Chef-kok Johan De Jaegher groeide letterlijk op tussen de pannen en potten van de Milano, het oudste Italiaanse restaurant van Antwerpen, dat door zijn vader in 1971 werd overgenomen. Na een Frans-georienteerde koks-opleiding aan de vermaarde hotelschool Ter Duinen in Koksijde, trad Johan op amper 19-jarige leeftijd in de voetsporen van zijn vader en nam het roer in de keuken van de beroemde familiezaak over. Door toedoen van de Italiaanse chefs die er dagelijks aan de slag gingen, ontwikkelde Johan een diepgaande liefde voor de verfijnde Italiaanse keuken die hij 25 jaar lang met de vele habitué’s van de Milano deelde. Tot hij besloot dat het tijd werd om zijn eigen gastronomische hotspot uit de grond te stampen.

De Pastorie
In Gooreind

‘Toen mijn echtgenote en ik merkten dat de plaatselijke Pastorie in Sylvie’s geboortedorp Gooreind vrij kwam te staan, wisten we meteen dat dit de perfecte locatie was om onze culinaire droom te realiseren: een eigen Italiaans restaurant, volledig naar onze smaak en visie ingericht. Het gebouw dateert uit 1866 en had nood aan een totale make-over maar tijdens elke stap van dit grondige renovatie-project hebben we er zorgvuldig over gewaakt dat de ziel en grandeur van dit pand bewaard bleven. Gezellige hoekjes, toetsen van goud, brons en koper en een ingenieuze verlichting zorgen voor een intiem karakter en een gevoel van luxueuze rust. Kortom het gedroomde decor om te genieten van onze liefde voor Italiaanse gerechten.  

    
De originele
Italiaanse keuken

Het absolute pronkstuk in onze keuken is de Morello Forni-pizza-oven, zeg maar de Lamborghini onder de gespecialiseerde houtovens. Op onze kaart vind je naast een  uitgebreid assortiment van authentieke pizza’s ook verschillende olijfolieën uit Piëmonte en de Chianti-streek, zorgvuldige gerijpte Balsamico-azijn, mozzarella di buffola, de fijnste Italiaanse vleeswaren, verse en gedroogde pasta’s die à la minute worden gekookt, zelfgemaakte ravioli en canneloni, Italiaanse klassiekers als osso buco, gebakken kalfslever, gamberoni a la grigglia,…

In de zomer heten wij u eveneens welkom op ons ruime terras dat uitkijkt over een oase van groen en waar je met een lekker glaasje prosecco of een aperitivo kan genieten van het vermaarde Italiaanse dolce far niente.

Wij hopen dan ook dat u zich in Il Divino di Milano laat meenemen op onze culinaire rondreis doorheen de lekkerste uithoekjes van de Italiaanse keuken.

The Coach House Restaurant

Once a Coach house to the nearby Manor, this hidden restaurant tucked away in the grounds of the Garden Centre has an old world charm all of its own and has been a favourite for  discerning diners for nearly thirty years.

A wide choice of excellent dishes are on the menu with our produce fresh from the market daily. Our fine wine list complements the menu perfectly, and a special two-course menu is available at lunchtimes.

Ruxley Manor Garden Centre, within which lies The Coach House restaurant.

Way back in 1080, William the Conqueror gave the land at Rokesle, as it was then known, to his half-brother, Odo, Bishop of Baieux. He rented this out to a certain Malgerius who assumed the name Malgerius of Rokesdale. At that time, eight knights commanded by William were given the task of defending Dover Castle and Malgerius did his annual twenty-day stint.

To this day, you still enter Dover Castle through the Ruxley gate.

Down the ages, various families have occupied the Manor House. Gregory de Rokesdale became Lord Mayor of the City of London from 1274 to 1285, this being perpetuated in a tablet on the wall of Lloyds Bank in Lombard Street. The present house dates from the 17th Century with later additions, although some of the interior is probably 15th or 16th Century.

To the right of the house is a large Mulberry tree which goes back to between 1610AD and 1615AD, when it was decreed in James 1st time that all landowners should be encouraged to produce silk. However, silkworms only enjoyed white mulberries and, unfortunately, the blue variety was planted.

Today, the Manor House has been converted into a Children’s Day Nursery under the name of Grace’s, she being the last member of the family to live there.
